Fragrance shopping: compare the bottle, not just the discount
Use concentration, bottle size and return conditions to make a more useful fragrance comparison.
Match the exact product first
Two fragrance listings can share a name and still be different purchases. Compare the full product name, concentration, bottle volume and included items. A gift set may contain several smaller products rather than the same full-size bottle sold separately.
Do not assume a higher advertised discount means better value. A discount is calculated against a reference price; your decision should use the final price for the product you actually want.
Use unit price without letting it take over
For a simple comparison, divide the bottle price by its volume using the same units. In an illustrative example, a $45 bottle containing 1.5 fluid ounces costs $30 per ounce, while a $70 bottle containing 3 ounces costs about $23.33 per ounce. The larger bottle is cheaper per ounce but requires $25 more upfront.
That comparison is useful only when the products are genuinely comparable. If you are trying a scent for the first time, buying more of it solely for the lower unit price can be a poor fit. Avoid buying a large bottle as a blind gift unless you know the recipient's preference.
Read the return conditions before opening
Fragrance and beauty return rules vary by retailer and product condition. Check whether an opened bottle can be returned, where an online purchase must be sent, and who pays return shipping. Keep the packaging until you are sure about the purchase.
For a gift, consider both the delivery date and the recipient's opportunity to return it. The store guides linked below point to official policies; the retailer's current terms and checkout price take priority.
- Same scent, concentration and bottle size?
- Any shipping charge after the coupon is applied?
- Original sealed packaging required for returns?
- Gift set contents individually useful?
