TECH BUYING

Buying a dash cam: the costs beyond the camera

Compare recording coverage, included accessories and installation before judging a camera deal.

Some store and offer links may earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. How our links work.

Decide what you need to record

Start with the use case: front-facing recording, front and rear coverage, or an interior view. Compare the exact model and package rather than assuming a product family includes every camera shown in promotional images.

A resolution label alone does not establish real-world image quality. Look for clearly identified sample footage for the exact model, recorded in conditions similar to your driving. We have not hands-on tested the products referenced by our store directory.

Build a complete setup budget

Check whether a compatible memory card, rear camera, installation cable or parking-mode accessory is included. Ask whether the features you want require a separate hardwire kit or a paid installation. A cheaper camera can become the more expensive setup once missing parts are added.

For example, compare a hypothetical $100 camera plus $25 in required accessories with a $120 bundle that already contains those same accessories. The bundle is $5 less before tax and shipping—but only if the components are equivalent and useful to you.

Keep installation and returns separate

A product refund does not necessarily reimburse installation, shipping or removal costs. Read the seller's return conditions before opening packaging or booking installation, and keep proof of purchase for warranty questions.

Check local rules for placement and recording before use. This is a purchase checklist, not legal advice or a recommendation to record people without required consent. Choose the setup that meets your needs without obscuring your view or compromising vehicle safety.
