SUBSCRIPTIONS
How to read a subscription deal without missing the renewal
Separate the headline monthly equivalent from the payment due today and the next renewal.
Write down three different numbers
Subscription advertising often highlights a monthly equivalent, but the payment schedule may require a longer term upfront. Before buying, record the amount due today, the length of the initial term and the renewal price or method used to determine it.
In an illustrative example, $72 paid upfront for 24 months works out to $3 per month. It is still a $72 purchase today. If a later renewal is priced differently, that initial monthly equivalent is not your ongoing rate.
Compare what the plan actually includes
Check the product tier, supported devices, account limits and any optional extras that are selected at checkout. A comparison is only meaningful if both plans provide the features you need. Do not pay for an added service simply because its price is bundled into a larger advertised saving.
For privacy software, read the provider's documentation about what the service does and does not protect. A VPN is not a promise of complete anonymity, and a discount does not establish that a service fits every security need.
- What amount is charged now, including any applicable tax?
- When does the subscription renew, and for how long?
- Can you turn off automatic renewal without ending the paid term?
- Does the refund policy cover renewals or only the initial purchase?
Save the terms you bought under
Keep the order confirmation and record the renewal date in your own calendar. Review cancellation instructions for the platform that actually bills you; a direct purchase and an app-store purchase may use different processes.
Cancelling automatic renewal is not necessarily the same as requesting a refund. Read those instructions separately. If a refund window matters to your decision, check the official policy before paying, rather than assuming a free trial and a money-back guarantee work the same way.
