COUPON KNOW-HOW
Percentage off or dollars off? Compare the actual checkout
Work out which eligible offer saves more without adding unnecessary items to your cart.
Compare both offers on the same eligible subtotal
A percentage discount changes with the amount of eligible merchandise. A fixed-dollar discount may depend on a minimum spend. Compare the offers against the same cart and account for excluded products before choosing one.
For an illustrative $80 eligible subtotal, 20% off saves $16. A $15-off offer would save $15 if the order meets its conditions. At a $60 eligible subtotal, 20% off saves $12. The fixed-dollar offer would be larger only if its minimum-spend rule still allows it.
Read the rules that change the math
Check whether the minimum is calculated before or after other discounts, whether sale products qualify, and whether the offer applies to the whole cart or selected items. Codes may be limited by account, region, channel or product category.
Do not assume two discounts stack. If the retailer permits combining offers, check the actual order total. Two percentage discounts applied sequentially are not added together: 20% followed by 10% reduces a $100 eligible price to $72, not $70.
- Is the code valid for this account and delivery country?
- Does the eligible subtotal meet the requirement?
- Did applying one code remove another benefit?
- Did the discount change shipping eligibility?
Stop at what you meant to buy
If you add an unneeded item to reach a threshold, include its cost when calculating the result. Saving another $5 does not justify spending $12 on something you do not want.
Keep future rewards separate from money saved today. A credit that expires or requires another purchase is not the same as a lower current payment. Review the final payment total, not just a savings banner, and use only codes you are eligible to redeem.
