Furniture deals: measure twice, check delivery once more
Check dimensions, delivery services and return logistics before committing to a bulky purchase.
Measure the entire route
Record the product's assembled dimensions and its packaging dimensions if listed. Then check doorways, hallways, turns, stairs and the elevator. A piece that fits the room may not fit through the route needed to get it there.
Allow space for real use: drawers opening, chairs pulling out and people walking past. Use removable floor markers to outline the footprint, then check it against the measurements rather than judging scale from a staged photograph.
Know what delivery includes
Delivery may mean different things on different product pages. Confirm whether the quoted service stops outside, brings the item into a room, includes assembly or removes packaging. Check for location restrictions and surcharges before counting a price as your final cost.
For a comparison, list product price, shipping, assembly and any required accessories on separate lines. If one seller includes a service that another charges for, compare the same completed outcome rather than just the headline prices.
- Exact dimensions and package sizes recorded?
- Material and finish described, not just pictured?
- Delivery location and appointment requirements understood?
- Return transport and packaging requirements checked?
Think through a return before ordering
A return policy does not make a bulky return effortless. Find out whether return shipping is deducted, whether assembly affects eligibility and whether the original packaging is needed. Consider how you would move the item if it had to leave again.
Inspect the delivery promptly and follow the retailer's instructions for reporting missing parts or damage. Photograph the condition if useful, keep the order details, and contact the seller before discarding packaging or attempting a repair that could affect your options.
